Kristen's Adventures

I am venturing out into the real world by moving across the country where I know virtually no one. There are ups and downs and I am always busy (which is the way I like it!). Most young people only move out into the "real world" because they have to once their college kicks them out (aka "Graduation"). I am not sure if I fit into that category or not. At least I wasn't kicking and screaming on the way out like some people!

So. Some of you may think that I have dropped off the face of the earth. I have in some ways, i.e. in the form of any sort of communication with anyone that I don't see face to face. I finally talked with my mom and Elroy this morning for the first significant period of time (more than a couple of minutes) in what seems like probably a few weeks, which is a long time for me. And Dad and I keep playing phone tag. The reason: homework. Yes, I have lots of homework. And, I am one of those people who spends lots of time on work, partly because I want to do as well as I can, partly because I worry about it a lot, partly because... I dunno, I want to get all of the answers right. For what it is worth, though I have heard that grades don't matter in grad school, this doesn't seem to be the case. My grades this semester will determine whether I can get funding next semester and so many other things that I can't even predict right now. It is a lot of pressure, as school always is.

But, I am learning things! I have a sense of accomplishment and I know that I am building toward better things in the future. This is why I am working so hard. I want to have the grades to show that I am working hard and should get funding/a job/(fill in the blank). I have two midterms Thursday morning along with homework in all 3 classes for Thursday, so this is a busy week. However, things seem to be coming together better as I go along and I feel pretty good about it all.

And don't worry, Will and I still go out once or twice a weekend. We even got to go out Thursday night this week since Will changed his schedule around to work 3 longer days instead of 5 shorter days.

To all of you whom I haven't been emailing/chatting/talking with: I am sorry! I will try to balance better, but I am still determined to spend a lot of time on work. I'll have time this summer perhaps.... :)

Yay for weekends!

So, Will's friend Morgan came over Friday night and after hanging out for awhile, we went to check out this pool hall near our place that I had run by a few times and been curious about. I was particularly curious about it since it is the ONLY place around here that is open late and has any semblance of a place with a night life. Anyway, it was a great place! Will and I are looking forward to heading back there soon. It is pretty big and open, but still has lots of little tables, a number of pool tables, and, this is the best part, games to check out! They have Jenga, chess, Connect 4, etc. I thought that was a great idea. And, they have Blue Moon, which is surprisingly hard to find around here. We definitely hit the jackpot with this one.

After working on homework most of Saturday, Will and I went out to meet Steve, Lizzie, and Sonja, all Whitties, for Steve's birthday. We started out in Bethesda at a place that had a hard time with orders, and didn't even bring limes to go with tequila! We had to ask for them. Oh, they also played only 90's music, which I was ok with since that is mostly what I listen to anyway. Ahhh, early high school. Good times.
Then we heading out to Adams Morgan and met up with Steve's friend from high school, Collin, and his girlfriend Rebekah. It is Collin's bday on Monday too. Oh, yes, and all this time it was SNOWING!! It was snowing nonstop, and it was beautiful. This morning, the bedroom was really bright because everything is covered in snow outside! Anyway, we went to Tom Tom's in Adams Morgan, and I paid $14 plus tip for a pitcher of Pabst. Wrong for so many reasons. We hung out and had a good time, and even danced a bit!
We finished off the night with some jumbo slice pizza... Mmmmmm.... I saw the whole pizzas in the back, where the jumbo slices come from. They are about 2 feet across! Then, on the way back to the Metro, we had a few mini snowball fights amongst us, along with a bigger fight with a random other group of people out for the night. It was a fun evening!

So, now it is Sunday. I need to work on more homework. 20 problems for Advanced Calc is a lot for one week! I also need to start on my other work.

Today is Will and my one year anniversary, so we are going out to dinner tonight! We are probably going to go to a Thai place in Foggy Bottom that we like a lot. Who needs a really expensive meal when $30 cuts it for DELICIOUS Thai food? I would also like to go take some pictures outside since it is so beautiful out, but I need to get cracking on my homework! Oh, and for all those worried about the weather, as I said, it was snowing a lot, but it was nothing too crazy and the max amount of snow we might get is 10 inches, so nothing too big. Besides, we don't drive here anyway!

Busy week!

So, I am getting my wish to be more busy. I now have homework in all of my classes. And a lot of homework! So, I am somewhat frantically working on it, but I also have been and will be seeing people, which is cool. Tessa my step sister came in town for a conference, so we got together to wander around Georgetown and then have dinner at a nice place! It was great to catch up.
Also, last week Will's aunt came in town and we met up with her for dinner, and met Will's cousin at the airport who is now in town for an internship with the Senate also! What else... Will's friend from MT is coming in town today for family stuff, so we will see him tonight. Steve's birthday is Monday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVE!!), so we will be celebrating tomorrow night by going out in a mass horde of people. SO! It has been/will be nice.

Also, I have decided to play club lacrosse at UMD! I basically forgot to look into it until this week, and then found out that they just started practicing Wednesday and so I will probably join them next week, and practice 3 days a week. It sounds like they are a good team but still relatively laid back. We will see! I am excited to play lacrosse again and also meet some people at my school!

Ok, time to go run so that I can then so more homework before Morgan comes over.

Ahhh, D.C.

Seriously! It is a beautiful day out right now! It must be around 60 or so... Ah yes, online it says 61. I just got back from a run and it was lovely! I don't mind colder weather too much (down to say 30 degrees), but the wind really gets on my nerves because it is so hard to do anything when it is windy (like holding a map) and it blows stuff into my eyes and contacts. But, today is different. As Will would say, it is a Southern weather day, or something like that. I even ran some stairs and that was enjoyable.. there must be something wrong with me.

In other news, I went out to Applebees for a nice happy hour with friend Wendy yesterday after class and that was really fun! Not sure what this weekend will bring, but I will be watching the Super Bowl for sure. Ooo, and now I have TWO homework assignments... though now I don't feel as much like doing them. Oh well, I will want to when I get bored again.
